Ohio County Commission Meeting Today on How To Direct Funds From Canceled Fireworks Show

WHEELING — Ohio County commissioners meet on a different day this week, and a discussion about how to direct money earmarked for flood assistance will likely occur.

The commission meeting slated for Tuesday night was postponed until 6 p.m. Friday.

Last month following June 14 flooding, the commissioners opted to not spend about $30,000 on fireworks scheduled to be set off on July 5 at The Highlands. They contended the money would be better spent on flood relief.

But they have yet to indicate just how the money will be directed.

“It’s on the agenda for Friday’s meeting to discuss,” said Commissioner Don Nickerson.

Commissioner Randy Wharton indicated the commissioners weren’t yet sure how to direct the funds.

“We are still figuring that out,” he said.

Commission President Zach Abraham didn’t immediately return calls seeking comment.

Also among the items on the commission agenda is discussion about donating one Ohio County Sheriff’s Department cruiser to the town of Triadelphia.

The commissioners have returned to their regular offices after construction at the City-County Building forced them to relocate in recent months. The meeting will take place in commission chambers on the second floor.

Starting at $2.99/week.
