Marshall County Assessor Eric Buzzard Being Held in Central Ohio Jail

ERIC BUZZARD

MOUNDSVILLE — Marshall County Assessor Eric Buzzard, who had his bond revoked in his criminal case Friday, has been booked into Licking County Jail in Ohio pending an extradition hearing, according to Marshall County Sheriff Mike Dougherty.

Dougherty posted a message on the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page after what he said were “several phone” calls inquiring why Buzzard, accused of seven counts of fraudulent schemes, was not listed on the Northern Regional Jail website.

The reason, Dougherty said, was that he hadn’t arrived there yet.

Dougherty said that Buzzard, who had his bond revoked for having contact with state witnesses, was in Ohio. The MCSO and West Virginia State Police forwarded the arrest warrants to the Newark, Ohio, Police Department, and Dougherty said Buzzard was arrested without incident.

Buzzard was listed on the Licking County Jail website as of Sunday afternoon.

Buzzard’s extradition hearing will happen sometime this week, Dougherty said, and he will then be transported back to West Virginia and lodged in Northern Regional Jail.

Buzzard was arrested in June on the fraudulent schemes charges accused of partnering with a local auto dealer to purchase vehicles for the Marshall County Commission at an inflated rate and pocketing the difference.

Allegedly, Buzzard received more than $30,000 from that operation.

At a September Marshall County Commission meeting — where commissioners approved a petition to start the process of removing Buzzard from office — attorney Don Tennant claimed that, in all, Buzzard derived around $118,000 in personal benefits from a variety of schemes, including misuse of county purchase cards and the county assessor evaluation fund.

As part of his bond agreement, Buzzard has not been able to perform his duties as assessor.

Starting at $2.99/week.
