WHEELING — The Wheeling Police Department announced Wednesday the identity of the body found in the Ohio River last week.
Police said the West Virginia Medical Examiner has determined that George Zachary Lekanudos, 37, of Wheeling was found along the shoreline of the Ohio River on the Ohio side on Jan. 5. The cause and manner of death have not yet been determined, according to police, and the investigation into his death continues.
According to authorities, around 8:20 a.m. Jan. 5, a worker along the river noticed a body and alerted authorities. The Bellaire Police Department called Wheeling police, as the Ohio River in that area is their jurisdiction.
Lekanudos’ body was located near a barge on the Ohio side near the Interstate 470 Bridge and Wheeling Fire Department personnel removed him from the river. He was taken to the West Virginia Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.
