W.Va. Property Tax Reimbursement Letters Being Mailed

WHEELING – Letters giving West Virginia residents the information they need to get the vehicle property tax they paid last year rebated should soon be in their mailboxes.

Some may have already received the MV-1 letters, which are presently being mailed, explained Alisha Clark, executive assistant in the West Virginia Department of Taxation.

Those not yet getting the letter still may access their MV-1 information by logging on to the MyTaxes.WV.Gov and seeing the first box that states “Motor Vehicle And Senior Citizen Property Tax Credits.” They should click on the “Request Another Motor Vehicle Property Tax Letter” option.”

This will take the taxpayer to a page with an application where they must enter the following information: their county, ticket number on tax ticket, social security number of the claimant, and driver’s license number or state issued ID number.

Clark wasn’t certain how many West Virginians qualified for and applied for the rebate last year.

“It just depends on how many people in West Virginia have paid their taxes timely, and have a property tax credit coming,” she said.

To be eligible for the refund, the vehicle owner must have paid last year’s vehicle tax bill in a timely manner. This means the total amount has to be paid in half or in full before Oct. 1, 2024. and the remaining half before April 1, 2025.

Seniors not required to pay property taxes may still claim the credit through the MyTaxes.WV.Gov website, as well.

Those filing electronically must input their credit claim number from their MV-1 as part of their return. Those doing a paper filing must submit a copy of their MV-1 letter along with their filing.

Vehicles that qualify are cars and trucks, motorcycles, buses, trailers that can be pulled by cars and trucks, antique vehicles and farm trucks. trailers and semi trailers.

Among those not qualifying are taxi cabs, mobile equipment and fifth wheel campers and travel trailers.
