Riley Watkins Drops Out Of W.Va. Delegate District 5 Race

RILEY WATKINS

WHEELING – A political newcomer making his first run for the House of Delegates has withdrawn from the race.

Riley Watkins, a Republican candidate in the District 5 Delegate Race, announced his withdrawal Tuesday afternoon.

Since his action came following the Feb. 27 deadline for candidates to withdraw from elections, his name will remain on the ballot for the May 12 primary election.

“The City of Wheeling and the State of West Virginia deserve a representative who can serve with complete focus and full commitment,” Watkins said in a released statement. “I hold myself to a high standard and believe in being fully invested in whatever I pursue. I also believe in being honest and transparent no matter what.

“After thoughtful reflection, I recognize that I cannot give this race the level of time, energy, and dedication I thought I would be able to when I filed to run.”

A certified fitness trainer, Watkins noted his passion and long-term purpose “are centered on helping others live healthier, stronger lives through my business and continued education.”

“I believe that by concentrating my efforts there, I can make the greatest positive impact on the people in our community,” he said. “While my name will remain on the ballot, I will not be actively pursuing this nomination.

“I am grateful for the support I’ve received and will continue working to contribute to our city and state through my work in health and fitness.”

Watkins did not immediately return messages seeking additional comment.

In addition to running his fitness training business, Watkins, 21, has been a student at West Liberty University majoring in exercise physiology.

He isn’t the first candidate to drop out of the District 5 race. Elgine McArdle, the former chair of the West Virginia Republican Party, withdrew prior to the Feb. 27 deadline and her name won’t be on the ballot.

Business woman and childcare center owner Beth Hinebaugh remains the only Republican candidate actively in the District 5 race.

There also is one candidate on the Democrat side – business owner Karen Shuler Stakem.

The winner of the election will take the seat presently held by Shawn Fluharty, D-Ohio. Fluharty is not seeking re-election to the House, but instead filed for the District 1 West Virginia Senate seat.

Starting at $2.99/week.
