Ohio County Schools To Host Mental Health Fair And “Digital Dopamine” Discussion

WHEELING — The concept of “digital dopamine” and youths being addicted to their smartphones will be the topic when Ohio County Schools hosts a mental health fair later this month.

The event will happen from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. April 23 at West Virginia Northern Community College. Attendance is completely free and open to the public.

Keynote speaker will be Jim Harris, director of Marshall University’s Interdisciplinary Behavioral Health Center and an assistant professor in the Department of Social Work. Harris will speak from 5 p.m. to 5:40 p.m. on the effects of “digital dopamine” and how technology affects the mental health of young people–particularly those who feel trapped or addicted to their devices.

After the discussion, from 5:40 to 7:30 p.m., all attendees will be able to build a conference-style schedule to fit their specific needs.

“We have over 25 presentations available all throughout WVNCC that offer requested topics not only from parents, but from students,” explained Nicole Shepherd, behavioral specialist with Ohio County Schools.

The presentations are sorted by elementary, middle, and high school focus, while some of the sessions are meant to appeal to all ages.

With topics like “The Adolescent Brain,” “Questions and Answers About Autism,” “Supporting Safe Gaming,” or “De-Escalation,” there are opportunities for learning to fit each attendee’s specific need, according to Karin Butyn, director of public relations for Ohio County Schools.

“We really hope the community joins us for a unique event that is designed truly to teach us all something new,” she added.

Registration is not required but is preferred to account for numbers. Sessions are intended for middle school-aged children through adults.

Free childcare will be offered for those attending the event.

Starting at $2.99/week.
