Police Locate Vehicle Involved in Wheeling Island Hit-and-Run That Injured Boy

WHEELING – Police were able to locate the vehicle they say was involved in a hit-and-run accident on Wheeling Island Tuesday that seriously injured a young child.

The incident occurred at around 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday near the intersection of Delaware and South Wabash streets on Wheeling Island. The vehicle struck the child and left the scene.

According to Wheeling Police Department Public Information Officer Philip Stahl, the child was alert when he was treated at the scene. The child sustained visible facial and other injuries.

The boy was taken to WVU Medicine Golisano Children’ Hospital for treatment, officials noted.

“He was taken to Children’s in Morgantown, and we are told he was expected to be OK,” Stahl said on Wednesday. “I’m not sure of the exact extent of the injuries.”

Photos shared on social media show the boy with a broken leg in a cast and extensive abrasions to his face.

After the incident occurred, Wheeling Police put out a public alert about the hit-and-run and posted images of the white or gray Honda CR-V that the suspect in the hit-and-run was driving. Those images had been captured on video surveillance cameras in the neighborhood, and police reached out to the public for any additional surveillance footage of the vehicle that may have been available. The images obtained by police showed unique features on the vehicle such as a sunroof, rear-mounted spare tire and stickers in the rear windows.

Officials noted that tips from the public led to the location of the vehicle. Witnesses of the incident said the driver of the vehicle was a female.

“We have since located the vehicle in question,” Stahl said on Wednesday. “There are no charges or arrests as of today, as the incident is still under investigation by the police.”
