Dan Lugaila Finds Inspiration In Challenging Son At Tough As Nails

WHEELING - Dan Lugaila wasn't so much concerned about his individual time in the Tough As Urban Challenge presented by The Health Plan on Sunday in Wheeling as he was besting his son's effort.
Lugaila, 51, of Pittsburgh, was part of a group of 16 friends who signed on for the Tough As Nails. Among the group was his son Gavin, 18. Lugaila's daughter Faith stood with the family with a sign supporting her father and brother.
It was their second time participating in the event. Lugaila first began the event at the urging of his cousin, Wheeling resident Bob Smith.
Lugaila works as a heating and cooling contractor during the day, and finds a way to train in his off hours.
"I try to run a couple of days a week to get ready," he said. "I don't know if I'm ready, but my main goal is to beat my son. Last year, he beat me by 35 seconds.
"I've been training more this year, so hopefully I can take him."
Lugaila noted the most challenging part of the course for him is the steps, called "the Stairway to Heaven."
"We like the step challenge," he said. "It's one of the most challenging things out there. It's always a great weekend. I'm glad to be a part of it. I want to do it again. This is only my second time, but I won't miss it again."
He noted the Tough As Nails contest is the only one in which he participates.
