Jones Gets Hancock Primary Win

NEW CUMBERLAND — Change is guaranteed on the Hancock County Commission after Tuesday’s primary voting.

Ronnie Jones, the former Weirton councilman and state delegate, defeated incumbent Commissioner Eron Chek in the Republican primary.

According to unofficial results from the Hancock County Board of Elections, Jones collected 1,779 votes, while Chek finished with 489 votes.

Speaking Tuesday night outside of the Hancock County Courthouse, Jones said he was happy with the results.

“I couldn’t have done this without my family and friends,” Jones said. “This is a big step — I’m going to take a week’s break and take it in.”

Jones will advance to the Nov. 3 general election, where he will face off against Brianna Bates, who was unopposed while seeking the Democratic nomination. Bates received 1,364 votes

Jones is a lifelong resident of Weirton, and he worked for the Weirton Area Water Board for 40 years until his retirement.

He also served on Weirton City Council for eight years and represented District 1 in the House of Delegates for four years.

“The voters know that I am behind our law enforcement and firefighters,” Jones added.

Chek did not return a call seeking comment.
