WHEELING - The Tough As Nails Urban Challenge presented by The Health Plan doesn't include a hip-hop dance challenge, but if it did Brad McMullen would be prepared.

McMullen, 55, of Barnesville has a new hip since he last ran the course two years ago. He was excited about participating on Sunday.

"It's a good opportunity to meet with some friends and spend the day working out, enjoying the weather and that kind of stuff," he said. "We're taking a challenge and pushing ourselves physically and mentally."

Sunday marked the third time McMullen has run the Tough As Nails Urban Challenge presented by The Health Plan, and he is quick to note which part he finds the most grueling.

"The stairs," he said. "The last time I did it, I got my right hip replaced five days afterward, so I was in a lot of pain after that."

After not participating last year, this was the first year for McMullen competing on a new hip.

"We went to the beach last year," he said.

McMullen works in Cambridge as a continuous improvement manager.

He goes to Ohio Valley Crossfit in St. Clairsville, sometimes "as many as four to times a week."

"It's a good community," McMullen said. "There are good people there. I highly suggest it if somebody is just wanting to start working out."

Starting at /week.
