According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, a passenger in a pickup truck was killed Thursday night in a two-vehicle crash involving a commercial vehicle on Ohio 78.
The crash occurred at approximately 9:57 p.m. Thursday in Adams Township, Monroe County.
Investigators said a 2021 Kenworth tractor-trailer operated by Jason A. Taylor, 48, of Elba, Ala., was attempting to enter westbound Ohio 78 and failed to yield to eastbound traffic.
A 2018 Ford F-150 operated by Larry R. Henthorn, 76, of Middlebourne, was traveling east when it struck the left rear portion of the commercial trailer, which was hauling sandboxes for natural gas fracking operations.
Henthorn, who was wearing a seatbelt, suffered serious injuries and was flown by medical helicopter to WVU Medicine Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
The pickup truck also carried two passengers: Deitra K. Henthorn, 65, of Sistersville, and Bernard R. McDougal, 73, of New Martinsville.
Authorities said Deitra Henthorn, who was seated in the front passenger seat and wearing a seatbelt, suffered serious injuries and was transported to Reynolds Memorial Hospital.
McDougal, who was riding in the back seat and was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected through the front windshield onto the roadway and sustained fatal injuries, the patrol said.
Troopers said a secondary crash also occurred when a 2017 Ford Edge operated by Allen C. Spencer, 79, of New Martinsville, struck the side of the trailer that remained in the roadway following the initial collision. Spencer suffered injuries and was transported to WVU Medicine Wetzel County Hospital.
Assisting agencies at the scene included the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Woodsfield Fire and EMS, Monroe County EMS, the Monroe County Coroner’s Office, the Ohio Department of Transportation, and Bill’s Towing of St. Clairsville and Salesville.
The crash remains under investigation, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
