Registrations Open For Free Outdoor Adventure Camp For Kids
WHEELING — Bridge Street Middle School will once again host an outdoor adventure camp for youths in grades 4-12, but organizers say spots are limited.
The camp will be held July 20-23 from 6-8 p.m. at the school.
“Then they all go home,” said Rick Thomas, a retired teacher who still coaches archery at Bridge Street Middle School.
Participants are not required to live in Ohio County.
The camp has room for 30 beginner archers and 30 advanced archers. At last count, 19 advanced archers and 10 beginners had registered, according to Thomas.
But the camp is not all about archery, Thomas said. The four-day program also will include activities such as camping, disc golf, first aid, fishing, kayaking, mountain biking and rock wall climbing.
Campers also will be introduced to orienteering, a navigation sport in which participants use a map and compass to locate hidden items in a field.
Thomas said the idea for the camp came after a visit to Cabela’s, where he watched children learning to fish in an outdoor pool.
“I started thinking, there’s more outdoor stuff we can do,” he said. “We can do something every night and divide it out so we’re constantly doing something.”
He reached out to community partners, including the Ohio Valley Mountain Men, who will teach participants activities such as axe throwing and starting a fire with flint.
Dr. Stephanie Freeman will teach first aid.
Don Miller, a former school resource officer at Bridge Street Middle School, and his friends will bring kayaks and take participants out on the river.
Representatives from Cabela’s also will help children learn how to set up and take down tents.
Everything is free.
“I used to charge $45, then last year the flood hit and I made it free,” Thomas said. “I’m going to make it free again this year to give back to the community.”
Each participant will receive a T-shirt and a certificate on Friday.
