West Virginia Voters Cast Primary Ballots Today
WHEELING — Today is Election Day for West Virginia voters, though if local early-vote numbers are any indication, there may not be a mad dash to the polls.
Voting locations will be open from 6:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. across the state.
West Virginia Secretary of State Kris Warner reported that while early voter turnout numbers were low for most of the early voting period that ended Saturday, voting in the last two days “saw a substantial increase in voter participation.” He noted this pushed overall early voter turnout up more than 8% compared to the last off-year primary election in May 2022.
There were 1,184 voters who cast ballots in Ohio County during the recent early voting period.
“I knew it wasn’t going to be the turnout we were used to,” said Erin Allietta, coordinator of elections in Ohio County.
She explained that while voting did pick up Friday and Saturday, the highest turnout on any early voting day was 184. This compares to the 2024 presidential election, when there were 400 to 500 early ballots each day, according to Allietta.
She encourages people to turn out to vote at their polling location Tuesday.
“There shouldn’t be a long wait,” Allietta said.
In Marshall County, there were 1,080 early votes cast.
Hancock County reported 705, just slightly under 2024 presidential election early vote totals of 716, according to elections officials.
Wetzel County had 544 early voters, and Brooke County had 495. Both counties said those numbers were in line with or below previous off-year primary elections.
