WHEELING — Members of Wheeling City Council are scheduled to meet tonight to consider a light agenda that includes funding for the city’s annual Independence Day fireworks display and approval of federal housing and community development grants.
Among the items on first reading is an ordinance authorizing $66,000 for the city’s share of costs for the July 4 fireworks extravaganza at Heritage Port, hosted in partnership with the Wheeling Symphony. Funding would come from the city manager’s budget, coal severance funds and the general fund.
This year’s celebration will coincide with the nation’s 250th anniversary.
Council also is expected to vote on a resolution approving the city’s Fiscal Year 2026 Community Development Block Grant and HOME Investment Partnership action plan through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
HUD has advised the city it is eligible to apply for $1,117,470 in Community Development Block Grant funding and $331,583 through the HOME program. The programs support low- and moderate-income residents, blight elimination efforts and affordable housing initiatives.
Another ordinance on first reading would establish a four-way stop at the intersection of 18th and Wood streets in East Wheeling.
Council also is expected to take final action on an ordinance authorizing the expenditure of $104,800 to Edgco of Lansing for demolition and abatement of several dilapidated properties. The city expects reimbursement through remaining state Dilapidated Properties Program grant funding.
The regular council meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. in council chambers at the City-County Building.
Prior to the meeting, the Development Committee will meet at 4:30 p.m. to discuss a property transfer request for 521 S. Penn St. and enter executive session regarding property acquisition. The Rules Committee will meet at 4:45 p.m. to discuss golf carts on municipal streets, and the Finance Committee will review the city’s April financial report at 5:15 p.m.
