Heavy rain triggers road closures, high water
WHEELING — Heavy rainfall and flash flooding Monday led to multiple road closures and reports of high water in Elm Grove,Triadelphia, West Liberty and other parts of Ohio County as storms moved through the region.
The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh issued flash flood warnings Monday afternoon for portions of the Ohio Valley, including Ohio County, warning of life-threatening flash flooding as up to 4 inches of rain fell in some areas with additional rainfall reported possible.
Flash flooding was already occurring across the warned area on Monday evening, with impacts expected on creeks, streams, highways and low-lying roads.
In Ohio County, several roads were closed due to high water, including areas in Elm Grove. The Elm Grove Terrace Shopping Center parking lot was flooded, and portions of nearby roadways were underwater. Kruger Street also was closed for about an hour as water backed up in storm drains.
Flooding was also reported in parts of Belmont County south of Barnesville and Belmont.
Additional communities in the warned area included Wheeling, Moundsville, Martins Ferry, St. Clairsville, Bellaire, Barnesville, Warwood, Bethlehem, West Liberty, Triadelphia, Clearview, Valley Grove, Shadyside, McMechen, Powhatan Point, Glen Dale, Bridgeport, Benwood and Bethesda, where heavy rainfall created the potential for rapidly rising water and dangerous travel conditions.
A hazardous weather outlook issued earlier in the day had warned of the potential for heavy rainfall, with storms capable of producing damaging wind gusts and isolated flooding in urban and poor drainage areas.
The National Weather Service emphasized the risk of dangerous travel conditions, urging motorists to avoid flooded roadways.
“Turn around, don’t drown when encountering flooded roads,” the agency said in its warning. “Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.”
Officials said the flash flood warning remained in effect until 7 p.m. Monday as storms continue to move through the region with more flooding possible in Marshall, Wetzel and Tyler counties.
