MOUNDSVILLE - Work is underway on the building site for the new nearly $5 million Moundsville Recreation Center.
Earth work began recently to prepare the land for the metal structure that will be delivered in sections and then put together by Dove Contracting of Washington, Pa.
The $4,895,413 project is taking place at Third Street and Cedar Avenue in the city.
"The contractor started on site and removed the top soil and did some rolling of the soil," Moundsville City Manager Rick said, adding some spongy areas of the soil will be corrected.
"The building itself will be delivered Sept. 1 and we have an anticipated completion date of April of next year."
The center will offer 20,300 square feet of space and be located at the former Sanford Elementary School property. It will house two basketball courts, an indoor track, batting cages, community room, party room, concession stand, showers, locker rooms, and a workout room with fitness equipment.
The building itself is anticipated to cost about $3.25 million to construct. The remainder of the $4.8 million total would go toward HVAC, special flooring and equipment.
The Thrasher Group provided the architectural and engineering plans for the building including those related to mechanical, electrical and plumbing services.
Healy said once the building is complete there will be several options for people to use it.
"There will be memberships to have access to everything at any time," he said. "Rentals where groups can rent pickleball courts or basketball courts for an hour at a time. We will have leagues for different things. The batting cages will be rented by the half hour or hour.
"The walking track will be open virtually all the time. We'll have rates to just come in and walk. So all those things are still being formulated, but probably in the fall we will have those numbers done."
Healy said everyone will pay the same rates whether from Moundsville and Marshall County or other parts of the Ohio Valley.
"The Marshall County Commission was a big contributor so we want to make sure people know that this is not just a Moundsville entity. We're building it. We will operate it. But the commission was a big part of it," he said. "And so it's open to everybody."
The rec center address will be 224 Cedar Ave. Healy said a ceremonial groundbreaking will likely take place July 15.
