WHEELING -- Wheeling YMCA youth campers got the chance to play on bounce houses, eat grilled hot dogs and even enjoy water slides during a special Playground Party sponsored by Mountaineer Brewfest.

The YMCA is set to receive a donation from proceeds from this year’s Mountaineer Brewfest, scheduled Aug. 15 at Wheeling Heritage Port.

As part of the day’s activities, the children also received a lesson on the dangers of drugs, alcohol, tobacco use, including smoking and spit tobacco, vaping and addiction in general from Ohio County Sheriff’s Department DARE Officer John Schultz.

Jeff Yourkovich, a board member with the Mountaineer Brewfest and the Wheeling YMCA, said since the Brewfest is only for adults 21 and older, organizers wanted to do something special for the children at the YMCA since it will be the recipient of this year’s festival proceeds.

“We thought it was a good idea from our standpoint with the festival to coordinate with the charity and do something for the kids and also teach them about alcohol awareness,” he said.

Yourkovich said the festival has raised more than $320,000 for local charities since it began in 2014.

The Mountaineer Brewfest opens at 4 p.m. Aug. 15 for general admission and at 3 p.m. for VIP admission. It lasts until 10 p.m. and will feature craft and microbrews, live music, food and more. Tickets are available at https://www.mountaineerbrewfest.com/
