Marshall County School Zone Lights Being Repaired

MOUNDSVILLE - Motorists traveling near schools in Marshall County may have noticed the lack of school zone lights flashing during the first week of school.
While work is being done to get the lights up and running again, motorists are being reminded to still slow down to 15 miles per hour in the morning and afternoons when students are going to and heading from class each day.
It's not only a matter of safety, but it's also a state law.
Marshall County Sheriff Mike Daugherty noted on his social media that "a little common sense goes a long way."
"I've received a lot of questions about the school zone lights not flashing. While the issue with the lights is being addressed, our children's safety does not depend on whether a light is flashing," he said. "As a general guideline, motorists should expect school zones to be active Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday between approximately 7:15-:15 a.m. and 3-4 p.m. and on Wednesdays 8:15-9:15 a.m. and 3-4 p.m. when children are arriving at and leaving school.
"Please use some common sense,” he added. “If you see school buses, parents dropping off or picking up students, and heavy traffic around a school, there's a pretty good chance kids are present. Slow down. A flashing light shouldn't be what reminds us to protect our children. Pay attention, use common sense, and slow down around our schools."
Marshall County Schools Superintendent Shelby Haines said as of Wednesday all flashing school zone lights had been fixed except for the McNinch Primary School east sign and John Marshall High School's south sign. However, she said both of those signs were expected to be operating by Thursday. The lights system is operated and maintained by an outside company, Eltec Corp.
During Tuesday's board of education meeting, Haines said deputies with the sheriff's department and even some administrators stepped up to help direct traffic during the outages. She thanked them all. Haines added that the first week and a half of the new school year in general has gone smoothly at all of the schools.
