MOUNDSVILLE - McNinch Primary School students got the VIP treatment on their first day of school Tuesday, walking the red carpet and getting high fives and hugs from their school's tiger mascot.

For Marshall County Schools' first day back for the 2026-27 school year, McNinch's theme was "Lights, Camera, Action."

As they got off their buses, students were greeted by teachers, Superintendent Shelby Haines, Principal Jessica Robinette and, of course, the tiger. As they walked on the red carpet, set off by velvet ropes, they also received fist bumps from parent educator Susie Baker and other teachers.

"We are very excited for our new school year," Robinette said. "We have teachers, faculty, staff, support, custodians and cooks working really hard to make today special and ready for what the new school year brings."

She said the movie theme is carried out in all classrooms and common spaces as well.

"We're ready to welcome our students for a very fun year," she said. "We've got backdrops for pictures and it's really fun. We'll do anything to get the kids excited."

Robinette hopes for a successful year for all the students.

"I want them all to learn and grow. They're all learning in different ways - academically, emotionally, physically. So that's what we're here for; to watch and support and be here for them so that happens," she said.

McNinch has about 400 students in grades pre-K, kindergarten, first and second grades.

A new driving lane was installed to allow parents to drop off their students beside the school this year. A new parking lot is also being installed near the front of the school.

Haines said she was happy to see the students starting a new school year.

"It's so great to see all of them so excited here," she said. "They have the movie theme with the red carpet. So the kids really got a kick out of that. We're ready for a great school year and we're glad to see all the kids back and the staff and faculty."
