MOUNDSVILLE -- The city of Moundsville will hold its free Community Day from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at Riverfront Park, 108 Jackson St.

The event will feature free food, games, music and activities for children and families. City Manager Rick Healy said the event is open to everyone, including those simply looking for a free lunch.

The menu will include hot dogs, chips, water, Twin Pops from Ziegenfelder's and snow cones from Snow Biz.

"We will have a duck pond, a coloring contest, a firefighter obstacle course, football toss game, basketball shot game and a putting game," he said. "There will be a bounce house and a foam party with red, white and blue foam for the kids to play in."

The city was unable to hold Community Day last year because of a scheduling conflict, so officials wanted to make this year's event even bigger.

"We will have 1,200 hot dogs ready to go," Healy said, noting the event typically draws 400 to 500 people. "Oglebay is bringing down some animals from the Good Zoo. There will be sand art ... balloon animals. There will also be free admission at the (Four Seasons Pool) that day and free hot dogs and chips there as well."

Community Day will be held rain or shine.

Marshall County's fire safety house will be on site for tours and educational activities. A Boy Scout troop will conduct a flag-raising ceremony.

Additional activities will include a boat-building and racing game, story time with free books and a dunk tank. The Marshall County Health Department's mobile clinic will offer free blood pressure checks and other screenings.

"Everyone is welcomed. It's hosted by employees, a lot of whom give up that day to hand out hot dogs and run the games," Healy said.

Sponsors include Varlas Trailer Park, retired employee Terry Vessels, current employee Ernie Jack, Elite Rod and Gun Club, Moundsville Historic Landmarks Commission, American Legion, Walmart, Marshall County Co-op, Last Chance Saloon, Marshall County Family Resource Network and Ziegenfelder's.

"It's a great place to meet people if you are new to the area. It's a fun event. We've packed a lot into four hours. It's a lot of fun," Healy said.
