WHEELING - Ohio County Schools is close to having in place a necessary agreement that will lead to Wheeling Park High School's tennis team having better courts on which to play.
Assistant Superintendent Rick Jones said Wednesday a contract pertaining to the tennis courts likely will be on the agenda for the next board meeting, set for 6 p.m. Monday,
"Our attorneys have marked up the agreements, and hopefully that gets done at our meeting next week," Assistant Superintendent Rick Jones said. "It could be approved Monday at the board meeting."
On Wednesday, he was waiting to hear back from Ohio County Board of Education President David Croft - an attorney involved - as to the status of the agreement.
"We're looking to get this completed, and we'll go from there," Jones added.
He has described the current courts at WPHS as being "in disrepair for several years." They have cracks and "are not nice anymore and need a full rehab."
He also has indicated the school may not want to repair the courts.
"If we did, we would need better seating and parking...," Jones has said. "Whatever we do, there will be a major improvement to our facilities.'
He promises whatever is decided the courts will be ready by the time tennis season starts next spring.
The school district also is considering a policy to allow some of their athletic facilities, such as the running track at WPHS, to be open to the public for use at set times.
"Probably when everybody is back to work we'll sit down together and look over some different options and ideas, and kind of build something from there," Jones said. "We just haven't done it yet."
