MOUNDSVILLE - Moundsville area residents enjoyed free food, games and live music during the annual Community Day held Saturday at Riverfront Park.
The free event, sponsored by the city of Moundsville and other organizations, gave residents an opportunity to celebrate the end of the summer season, visit with each other and meet city workers as well.
"It's sort of a way the city gives back," said Moundsville City Manager Rick Healy. "We have a lot of our employees dressed up in blue shirts today, and they've given up a day to come down and help. It's kind of neat to have people in a casual atmosphere meeting with the public.
"So often they come in and we're in our dress clothes or whatever or our fireman's uniforms or police uniforms and they don't really get to interact.
"Today, we can do it on a real casual basis. And I think it's important to meet with the community, too."
In addition to free hot dogs, hamburgers, chips and drinks, Snow Biz was also handing out snow cones and Ziegenfelder was giving out frozen treats as well.
Live music was provided by The Muddle at the park's outdoor stage.
Free activities and games included balloon animals, basketball shot, boat building, a bounce house, coloring contest, duck pond, dunk tank, firefighter obstacle course, fire safety house, foam party, football toss, free food, music, putting game, sand art, story time and swimming at the Four Seasons Pool.
There were also local organizations giving out information and trinkets. The Marshall County Animal Shelter attended along with two of its adoptable dogs. Marshall County Schools had its radio-controlled bus mascot driving around as well.
Riverfront Park also boasts a playground, bocce ball court, dog park and pickleball court.
Along with the city of Moundsville, Community Day sponsors included Varlas Trailer Park, retired employee Terry Vessels, current employee Ernie Jack, Elite Rod and Gun Club, Moundsville Historic Landmarks Commission, American Legion, Walmart, Marshall County Co-op, Last Chance Saloon, Marshall County Family Resource Network and Ziegenfelder.
