WHEELING - Ghosts and goblins and friendly spirits are returning to Ohio County Schools, but they won't be making much noise to scare anybody.
The school district will host its annual sensory-friendly trunk-or-treat event from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 23 at Steenrod Elementary School.
The event is planned with a focus on students with special needs and their siblings as a way they can enjoy Halloween festivities without the noises and stimulation that often upsets them.
About 50 students attended the free event last year, though pre-registration is necessary. A form is available on the Ohio County Schools Facebook page and will be added to the Ohio County Schools web page.
"Our sensory-friendly events are such a special tradition in Ohio County Schools," said Karin Butyn, director of communication and related arts for Ohio County Schools. "They bring together so many kinds of community members, and they create a truly perfect evening for our staff and volunteers."
Butyn noted how the event differs from traditional Halloween celebrations.
"It is a quieter opportunity for people who are easily overstimulated," she explained. "It is a safe space for those who want to experience Halloween in a way that feels comfortable."
Nicole Shepherd, director of student intervention and support programs for Ohio County Schools, explained the act of simply standing in line is often difficult for students with sensory needs.
When they register, students and their families will pick a time for their visit. Once a time period is filled, that period is crossed off, Shepherd explained.
The event will include visual and communication aides available to the children while cutting down on their wait times, she continued.
"There will be lots of supports built in so students with disabilities can participate," Shepherd said. "There will be a button at each station that says 'trick-or-treat' to help those children who are non-verbal.
"We will schedule times for students so they don't have to wait in lines because it is difficult for them.”
She noted Ohio County Schools is excited to host sensory-friendly events throughout the year.
"There will be a sensory-friendly Santa coming in the future, and maybe an Easter Bunny," Shepherd said.
Students participating must be students in Ohio County Schools.
Members of the public wanting to pass out candy as part of the trunk-or-treat do not have to be school district residents, but they do still need to register, according to school officials.
