WPHS/Wheeling Park Commission Tennis Courts Project Moving Fast

WHEELING -- The old tennis courts operated by the Wheeling Park Commission are now gone, and soon Wheeling Park High School students will be playing on the new hard-surface courts being constructed there.
Last month, the commission and Ohio County Schools announced a partnership through which the school district would pay up to $650,000 to replace the commission's tennis courts. The move is an attempt to bring them up to the requirements for high school competition play in West Virginia.
A drive this week past the courts -- located across from the Sonneborn Shelter within Wheeling Park -- reveals a great deal of mud where the courts once were. The contractor, Vasco, has been making quick progress.
"They are moving faster than I anticipated," Assistant Superintendent Rick Jones said. "They started a week after the board meeting (when the partnership was approved.) They are doing a fantastic job.
"They told us it would be a six-week project. They are already over two weeks in."
There were no workers on site this past Thursday.
"The ground is soft. They told me they might have to wait for a few dry days before the next phase of the project," Jones said.
The former surface that was removed had been a Har-Tru sand/clay surface that benefitted senior citizens who played on the court.
The court to be installed will have a hard-court surface required by the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission.
