Ohio County Country Fair Offers Family Fun

As visitors to Oglebay Park Resort revel in the sights and sounds of Oglebayfest, they can also get a taste of a hometown community fair, filled with livestock, backed goods, hog calling contests and more.
The annual Ohio County Country Fair is also being held on the Oglebay Park Resort grounds at the park’s Site 1. Fair Board President Justin Miller said that all of the things that make a country fair special can be found at Oglebay this weekend.
“The draw for this type of fair is really based in family fun that has no cost,” he said. “Your family can join us for the weekend and have no expense to par, no expense to enter and all our contests are free thanks to our sponsors and donors.”
Visitors can peruse several tents that house livestock like rabbits, cows and alpacas, as well as tents that include the various contests — baked goods like cakes, cookies and fudges; canned goods like vegetables, jellies and soups; along with eggs, flower arrangements and more, all competing for a coveted blue ribbon.
Among the new events this year are free family movie nights sponsored by the Wheeling Rotary. On Friday, families could watch “Cars” at the fair. At 7 p.m. Saturday, they’ll be able to watch “Paddington 2.”
And all the favorite events have returned. On Saturday, the hog calling contest begins at 12:30 p.m., with a donut eating contest at 2 p.m., the baked goods auction at 2:30 p.m., and the pedal power tractor pull at 3 p.m. On Sunday, the rock throwing contest begins at 1:30 p.m., with the baby crawling contest at 2 p.m. and another baked goods auction at 2:30 p.m.
Miller said everything available at the fair is exactly what a down-home community fair should be.
“It’s that community vibe,” he said, “and it’s funny how it draws a crowd. When you first think of these events, you think, ‘Oh, that’s not going to be very interesting to watch.’ But then once folks step in and actually watch it, they all go, ‘Oh, this is fun.’ And then they go register and it grows year after year.”
