MOUNDSVILLE — House of Delegates District 7 Republican incumbent Charles Sheedy is facing a challenge for his seat against Democrat Sarah Reggi during the Nov. 3 general election.

Sheedy believes people should vote to reelect him because of experience in government. He noted he is a two-term office holder, serving on energy and government committees. He is also chairman of the Veterans Affairs committee, “protecting District 7 from encroaching regulations.”

He said he’s passed “numerous bills for Veterans Energy protections, county and city protections.”

Among them, he said, included energy fairness where coal severance will be paid where the coal is extracted from the face, not where it surfaces, as well as tncreased bond requirements for county elected officials that handle taxpayer dollars. He offered the example of the indictment of former Marshall County Assessor Eric Buzzard, which cost the county $78,000 to prosecute with a bond covering only $5,000.

He said he has been a familiar face around the district, attending Marshall and Wetzel County commission meetings, along with meetings of various city councils, county volunteer fire department associations and school boards. He also has worked with the state Division of Highways and other utilities and worked to improve drinking water within the district.

“I am a dedicated full-time delegate that is twice retired and has devoted the past five years to the whole area and has worked across the aisle for needed legislation,” he said. “I am not a part-time delegate and that is what the residents expect now, not someone that cannot devote part time and work the other protecting basic conservative values.”

Sheedy considers himself a “true moderate” that is devoted to the district and not national party policies.

“What should be expected of a delegate,” he said.

Reggi said voters should choose her because she cares about all West Virginians and will listen to constituents’ concerns, regardless of their party affiliation.

“I plan to address issues that will support our public school children, protect worker rights, address our failing infrastructure, and give back local control,” she said. “While my opponent has sold out West Virginia by passing legislation like the pro data center bill HB 2014 and ignored mounting problems like the school funding formula, I won’t.”

Reggi, a speech pathologist who works as a speech therapist in both public and private schools, said her experience in child development and working with schools systems will help her if elected.

“Throughout my career I have gained experience working with individuals with different beliefs and backgrounds. I am a strong researcher, advocate and problem solver,” she said. “I won’t be swayed by lobbyists, corporations or special interests over the people I represent. I value the experience and expertise of the residents of District 7 and will put that knowledge to good use when considering legislation.
