The Marshall County Sheriff's Office and West Virginia State Police are investigating a double murder and an officer-involved shooting on Middle Grave Creek Road, Sheriff Mike Dougherty reported Thursday morning.

Deputies responded to a residence after Marshall County 911 received a call at approximately 1:40 a.m., in which no one spoke on the line.

Upon their arrival, a male suspect fired a pistol at deputies, Dougherty said. A deputy returned fire, fatally striking the suspect.

Deputies then entered the residence and found two people dead.

The investigation remains active. Authorities said additional details will be released as they become available.

John Marshall High School closed abruptly this morning just prior to the start of classes, with a parent noting children already had boarded buses.
