MOUNDSVILLE — One of Moundsville’s own World War II heroes, the late Raymond Carl Richmond, is coming home more than eight decades after his death.

Richmond, a World War II prisoner of war who was killed in 1945, is scheduled to be honored during a Veterans Day service on Nov. 11, said Moundsville City Manager Rick Healy during a city council meeting this week.

“The annual Veteran's Day service will be extra special to Moundsville this year, as one of our hometown soldiers is finally coming home,” Healy said. “The entire service will be dedicated to Raymond Carl Richmond whose aircraft was shot down April 2, 1945. He was subsequently captured by Japanese forces and taken to the Tokyo Military Prison on April 16, 1945. On May 26, 1945, while still imprisoned, he was killed during the firebombing of Tokyo.”

Richmond’s remains were identified July 7 by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency.

“After 81 years, he can finally be returned home. I urge all citizens to attend this service and honor Mr. Richmond, who is the great-uncle of Senior Building Inspector Joe Richmond,” Healy said.

Moundsville’s Veterans Day service is slated for 11 a.m. Nov. 11 at the Marshall County Courthouse fountain.

Richmond’s remains will arrive at the Pittsburgh International Airport on Nov. 11 and will be escorted back to his hometown of Moundsville.

Funeral and visitation services are being planned for Friday, Nov. 13, and Saturday, Nov. 14, by Grisell Funeral Home.
