Main Street Bank will soon have a new look and a new name, as First Community Bank and Main Street Bank recently announced Main Street's merger into the First Community.
Under the new agreement, the Wooster, Ohio-based Main Street Bank will merge into the Bluefield, Virginia-based First Community Bank, with First Community continuing as the surviving corporation.
With the merger, one member of the Main Street Bank Board of Directors will join the First Community Bank Board of Directors, and Main Street President and CEO Mark Witmer will become First Community Bank's President of the Ohio Region.
"Main Street Bank is a high performing community bank, presenting a balance sheet and loan asset generation very complimentary to First Community Bank's liquidity and balance sheet management," said First Community Bank President and CEO Gary Mills in an news release. "They possess a high acumen in farm and agricultural lending which will allow First Community to better serve its longstanding rural markets."
The merger gives First Community Bank entrance into the midwest market, as First Community currently has branches in West Virginia, Virginia, Tennessee and North Carolina. West Virginia branches include New Martinsville, Sistersville, Hundred, Beckley, Bluefield, Buckhannon, Athens, Cowan, Craigsville, Daniels, Ellenboro, Grafton, Harrisville, Hinton, Lindside, Man, Middlebourne, Oceana, Pennsboro, Pineville, Princeton, Richwood, St. Marys and Summersville.
Main Street's local branches include Wheeling, Moundsville, Toronto, Wellsburg and St. Clairsville, along with multiple branches in northeast Ohio.
"This partnership represents an exciting next chapter for Main Street and an attractive opportunity for our shareholders, customers and employees," Witmer said in a news release. "We have built a strong community banking franchise through disciplined lending, exceptional customer service and longstanding relationships in the markets we serve.
"By joining First Community, we will gain the financial strength, lending capacity and expanded capabilities of a larger organization while preserving the local relationships and personalized service that have been central to our success," he added.
At September 30, 2026, Main Street reported approximately $1.6 billion in consolidated assets. Based on the companies' reported assets at that date, the combined organization is expected to report approximately $5.2 billion in assets before transaction-related adjustments.
The agreement has been unanimously approved by the boards of directors of both First Community and Main Street. Completion remains subject to approval by the shareholders of both companies, receipt of required regulatory approvals, and other customary closing conditions. The transaction is expected to be finalized early in the second quarter of 2027, following satisfaction or waiver of the applicable closing conditions.
This would mark the second merger Main Street Bank, which originally was based in Wheeling, has participated in since 2023, when Main Street announced it would merge with Wooster-based Wayne Savings Bank. The combined company kept the Main Street name, but its headquarters shifted to Ohio.
