WHEELING - The Ohio County Animal Shelter is sending out a bark for help as the shelter has been currently full of dogs, and employees then had a seizure of about 15 additional dogs from one location this week.
"It was just poor living conditions," explained Shelter Manager Dave Campbell.
The shelter already was housing 24 dogs, not counting the dogs seized that are presently being kept in a quarantine area within the shelter. The main shelter has capacity for 26 canines, he reported.
"We have to move some things around. We've been asking for foster homes or for people to come in and adopt," Campbell continued.
He noted that in recent months the number of dog adoptions at the shelter has gone down.
"It's been difficult finding homes for the dogs, specifically," Campbell said. "The cats we are doing a little bit better on, but the dog adoptions have slowed down.
"We just do the best that we can. We are looking to find foster homes - or do anything they can to maybe take the dogs temporarily."
Those interested in helping out or even adopting an animal should first make arrangements to come to the shelter to meet their prospective pet, he added.
"We like to have a conversation with our fosters so we can find the right family for our dogs, and the right dog for the family," Campbell said.
As for felines, he said there are many stray cats in the community people would like to bring in to the shelter. But the shelter can't accept any more cats until more are adopted out.
Campbell commended the community for being quick to respond when the shelter needs more pet food, bleach, blankets or additional cleaning supplies.
"We actually have a lot of supplies right now," he said. "The one thing we need that is the hardest to get is a good home for the animals."
Those interested in setting up an appointment with the animal shelter should call 304-547-1013. The shelter is located at 7011 National Road in Triadelphia.
