Wheeling Park Girls Soccer Finishes Season As Class AAAA Runners-Up
Trending
The Class AAAA state championship hopes of the Wheeling Park High School girls soccer team lasted until double overtime, but they finally faded when a goal in the 93rd minute gave George Washington a 2-1 win and the crown.
It was Ellie Pray’s shot from the center penalty area in the second overtime that found the back of the net and gave GW the win. The Charleston-based Patriots had to come back from a one-goal deficit to overcome the Wheeling-based Patriots.
Wheeling Park’s Corin McFarland opened the scoring from the from center 6-yard area with her 13th goal of the season, giving WPHS a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute. That lead lasted until the game’s 65th minute, when Janiya Thomas-Stevens scored from the center 6-yard area to knot the score at 1-1. Pray assisted on that goal, Thomas-Stevens’ ninth of the season, before knocking in the game-winner in extra time.
McFarland, Brenna Tipton and Riley Wright all made the all-tournament team.
