Donald A. Haskins, 88, of Glen Dale, WV passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Saturday, February 18, 2023.
Don was born on December 5, 1934 in Parkersburg, WV to the late John Wiley of Farmville, VA and J. Blanche Rogers Haskins of New Martinsville.
A Christian by faith, he was a member of the East Richland Friends Church of St. Clairsville, OH. Don enjoyed 64 active years with his wife, Jo Anne "Jody" Lemasters Haskins, whom he met while they were attending West Liberty State College.
Don is survived by children, Dawn Anne Haskins-Powell, Mark Bryan (Debbie) Haskins, and Michael Alan (Carol Philabaum) Haskins; five grandchildren, Devin Powell, Heather Haskins, Benjamin Haskins, Holly Haskins, Christopher Haskins; and two great-grandchildren, Adelynn Yoder and Landon Haskins.
He was preceded in death by siblings, Frances E. Haskins, Ruth E. Scott, J. William Haskins Sr.; and a grandson, Jason B. Haskins.
Don was a beloved and respected coach, leader and mentor to his family, friends, students, colleagues, and members of the community. He graduated from Magnolia HS in New Martinsville and then attended Greenbrier Military School. He earned an AB degree at West Liberty University and an MS in Education Administration at WVU. A lifelong athlete, he also participated in team sports including football, basketball, and baseball during his academic years.
Don was teacher, coach, and principal at Cameron HS; principal at John Marshall HS; and Superintendent of Marshall Co. Schools for 17 years. He served two terms in the WV House of Delegates, was a US Marine Corps officer, inducted into the West Liberty University Wall of Honor and John Marshall Wall of Fame, actively served as a leader at numerous community organizations including 34 years on the Reynolds Memorial Hospital Board of Directors.
He enjoyed bicycling, swimming, carpentry, fishing, hunting, sporting events, travel, camping, reading, history, and numerous other hobbies and interests.
Family will receive friends on Friday from 3-8 p.m. at Grisell Funeral Home, 400 Jefferson Ave., Moundsville; where services will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. with Pastor Jerry Wenger officiating.
Private interment in Halcyon Hills Memorial Park will follow.
