Douglas "Doug" Matthew Smith Jr., 85, of Wheeling, passed away Sunday, February 11, 2023 at home, surrounded by his family
He was born October 15, 1937 in Wheeling, WV son of the late Douglas M. Smith, Sr. and Helen Theresa Balash Smith.
Doug was a retired switchman from the former C&P Telephone Company, with over 30 years of service. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers and the Elm Grove Eagles, a part time employee at Wheeling Park, enjoyed golfing, bowling and fishing, was a Catholic by faith and a U.S. Army veteran.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one sister: Katherine "Kitty" McCready.
Survivors include his wife, of 58 years, Peggy Ferguson Smith; one son: Michael (Dannie) Smith of Wheeling; one brother: Joseph "Smokey" Smith of Wheeling; six grandchildren: Allison (Chase) Byrne, Michael (Kristin) Smith, Brendan, Declan, Laidan and Madigan Smith; expected great grandson: Wren Byrne and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the Grisell Funeral Home & Crematory, 1 Ridgecrest Road, Bethlehem/ Wheeling with Rosary Devotions and Vigil service being recited at 7:30 p.m.
Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated on Thursday at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, 690 Mt. Olivet Road, Wheeling with Fr. Joseph Augustine as celebrant.
Entombment in Park View Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Wheeling.
