GOLDIE BASIL

Goldie Markos Basil, 86, formerly of Short Creek, WV, passed away Thursday, February 23, 2023, at The Inn at University Village, Massillon, Ohio with her children and beloved sister Stella by her side.

She was born in Short Creek, WV, on February 6, 1937, daughter of the late Paul S. and Diamanto Tsuhlares Markos.

Goldie graduated from Wellsburg High school, earned her undergraduate degree in education from West Liberty State college, where she was a cheerleader and homecoming Queen. She met the love of her life Charles "DoDo" Basil at West Liberty. She went to earn her master plus 45 at WVU.

Goldie's career spanned from the Ohio Valley, PA, Elkins and retired from Brooke County schools as a guidance counselor.

She was an amazing wife, mother, sister, Yia Yia, and aunt. Returning to Brooke County she lived with her sister Stella in their childhood home for nearly 40 years. She was a beautiful soul who always had a smile for everyone. She loved her family, and she was devoted to her church and Greek Community. She was past President of Ladies of Philoptochos, a member of the Daughters of Penelopes and spent many hours baking and volunteering at the annual food festivals. Everyone that met Goldie felt her kindness, energy, and love.

In addition to her parents, Goldie was preceded in death by her husband, Charles A. Basil, Sr.; two brothers, Nick and Manuel Markos; nieces, Tammy Markos and Toni Lynn Basil; brothers-in-law, Samuel C. Basil and Marenos Sfamenos; sister-in-law, Gertrude Markos and first cousins, Manuel Tsuhlares and his wife, Linda.

Surviving are her two children, Alexis A. Basil of Short Creek, WV and Charles A. Basil, Jr. (Tammie) of Moon Township, PA; one grandson, Charles A. Basil, III; sister, Stella Sfamenos; cousins, Manuel (Janeen) Markos, Paul Markos, Debbie (Dan) McDonald, Helen (Greg) Hannan, Steve (Nancy) Sfamenos, Nickie Sfamenos, Paul Basil, Lambros Tsuhlares, Anna and Goldie Tsuhlares; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins and sister-in-law, Mary Basil.

Friends will be received at Kepner Funeral Home, 2722 Warwood Avenue, Wheeling, WV 26003 (304-277-2722) on Wednesday, March 1, 2023, for a Trisagion Service at 2 p.m. and visitation from 2-4 & 6-8. Funeral services will be held at St. John the Divine Greek Orthodox Church on Thursday, March 2, 2023, at 10 a.m. with Father Demetrios Tsikouris and Father Spyridon Kehayes officiating.

Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery, Wheeling.
