Nina Darrah McHenry, 92, of Wheeling, West Virginia passed away Saturday April 22, 2023 at Vitalia Senior Living in Strongsville, OH.
Nina was born November 5, 1930 in Bristol, VA, while her mother and older sister, Marjorie, were en route to join their father in Miami, Florida for the winter.
Her childhood was full of fond memories of growing up on Wheeling Island. After graduating high school in 1948, she enrolled at West Virginia University. She majored in Home Economics, minored in Biological Sciences, and was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority, graduating in 1952.
Nina met the love of her life, Jesse, who was finishing his undergrad degree in Morgantown. The couple were engaged and married 6 months later. Jesse and Nina lived briefly in Cheyenne, WY before moving to Okinawa, Japan, where Jesse served as an officer in the US Air Force. While there, they welcomed the birth of their first son, Jesse. After returning to the states, the couple settled in Pittsburgh, where their daughter, Carol, was born. Nina continued her studies and completed her Masters in Education. She taught courses at a local high school and also Purdue University, after Jesse took a promotion with US Steel and they relocated to Crown Point, IN. Their son, Cliff, was born a few years later. As Jesse's career continued to advance, the couple relocated to Poland, OH and Weirton, WV before coming full circle to retire in Wheeling, WV.
Nina never hesitated to take on a new challenge. Whether it was playing piano or banjo, learning to ski, sail, bike or golf, refinishing furniture or taking on a home renovation project, she had the energy and the will to get it done. Determined, best described her attitude.
Over the years, she and her husband Jesse made great memories traveling with family and friends throughout the world. Together for 67 years of marriage, they enjoyed life's adventure!
In addition to her parents, Nina is preceded in death by her sister Marjorie Duff; her husband Jesse McHenry; her son, Jesse P McHenry III and his wife, Sheila; their grandson, Payton McHenry; and her son-in law, Frank Loggie.
She is survived by her 2 children, her daughter, Carol McHenry (Tom) Scheidemantel of Strongsville, OH and son Cliff (Andrea) McHenry of Sarasota, FL; 6 grandchildren, Heather McHenry (Justin) Kamm, Parker McHenry, Allison McHenry, Frank Loggie Jr (partner Eric Wells), Kristie Loggie (Matt) Fabbro, Danny Loggie; and one great-grandchild, Alexis Teasley.
A celebration of life is planned for Saturday June 10, 2023 from 12p-3p at the Oglebay Park picnic sites overlooking Schenk Lake.
