In Loving Memory of Delores "Gerry" Geraldine Kummers Cook, a remarkable soul who brought love, laughter, and adventure into our lives. On Tuesday, May 23, 2023, she gracefully bid farewell to this world at the age of 91, finding solace in the embrace of eternity at Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Wheeling, WV.
Born on November 8, 1931, Gerry was a radiant light that emanated from the loving union of George and Hattie Nelson Kummers. She charmed everyone with her vivacity, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those fortunate enough to have known her.
In this moment of sorrow and gratitude, take solace in knowing that Gerry has been reunited with her husband and eternal companion Leslie Jack Cook. Their love story, which spanned 50 years, continues now in the realm beyond. The joy of their reunion brings comfort to their family's grieving hearts, knowing that they are together once again.
One of five girls growing up, Gerry emerged as the sole survivor among her late sisters Connie LeGrande, Emily Wilcox, Eileen Jefferson, and George Ann Stanfield. She was also preceded in death by her son Fred Cook.
Gerry's journey through life was nothing short of extraordinary. Not content with simply living and working as a hairdresser at Stone and Thomas and LaKels, she embraced the thrill of adventure. Her daring spirit led her to skydive, defying gravity and experiencing the exhilaration of soaring through the open skies. The memory of her fearlessly spreading her wings and leaping into the unknown will forever inspire us to embrace life's adventures with courage and zest.
But Gerry's zest for life didn't stop there. She was an avid West Virginia football fan, cheering passionately for her beloved team. Saturdays were filled with laughter, joy, and the occasional nail- biting game that kept her on the edge of her seat. Her unwavering support for West Virginia was a testament to her loyalty and unwavering spirit. She also brought the same enthusiasm to her many adventures as she loved traveling, camping, and hiking many of West Virginia's State Parks with her family.
Gerry was also a golf enthusiast who proudly swung her way through the Wheeling Park and Oglebay Park Women's Golf League. She could putt with the best of them, often turning the green into her own personal comedy show, as her skillful slices and unexpected bounces left her fellow golfers in awe and laughter. Even if she didn't always score a hole-in-one, Gerry's infectious laughter and adventurous spirit made her a beloved member of the league, providing endless entertainment on the fairways. Together, they hold the torch of her spirit high, carrying her light into the future.
While we gather here today, we can't help but smile through the tears, for Gerry's life was a beautiful tapestry woven with love, laughter, and cherished moments. She had a mischievous twinkle in her eyes and an infectious sense of humor that could lighten the heaviest of hearts. No family gathering or football game was complete without her contagious laughter echoing through the room, brightening our souls.
Gerry's legacy continues through her adoring daughter, Kim (Dave) McCluskey of Sneads Ferry, NC, whose life she filled with love and guidance. She leaves behind a proud lineage of grandchildren, each a shining testament to the love that defined her existence: Michael (Jeanine) Cook of Wheeling, Nick (Jennifer) McHenry of College Place, WA, David (Amanda) Cook of Sarasota, FL, Justin (Sarah) McHenry of Charles Town, WV, and Brian (Erica) Cook of Salisbury, MD. Additionally, she leaves behind two daughter-in-law's, Mary Ellen Cook of Wheeling, and Patricia Cook of Wheeling. Together, they hold the torch of her spirit high, carrying her light into the future. Ten great- grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild complete her cherished lineage, a testament to her enduring love.
We invite you to join us on Friday, May 26, 2023, as we celebrate Gerry's extraordinary life. From 10 AM, friends and family will gather at Kepner Funeral Home – Elm Grove, where memories will be shared, tears will be shed, and laughter will reverberate through the walls. At 1 PM, Pastor George Webb, a cherished friend, will guide us through a heartfelt service, paying tribute to Gerry's beautiful soul. As the day draws to a close, we will lay her to rest in Greenwood Cemetery, Wheeling, a serene final resting place for a woman whose light will forever shine in our hearts.
