Daniel Lee Finell Sr., 87, of Wellsburg, WV, passed away on Wednesday at his residence.
Dan was born on May 3, 1936 in McMechen, WV. He was the son of the late Frank Daniel Finell and Charlotte Mae (Dean) Finell.
Dan served in Marine Corp as a 2nd Lt. in Quantico, VA. He was a member of the Community of Christ, Wellsburg.
Dan worked as a teacher, athletic director, and principal of Brooke High School, and was the last sitting head principal of Wellsburg High School.
He coached the Wellsburg High School baseball team for five years, which included a WV State Championship in 1962. His teams carried a record of 121 wins and only 21 losses. Dan received the key to the city for Wellsburg for his success with the baseball team.
Dan served his community in many capacities, which included Past President of the OVAC, Past President of the Mountaineer League, Past Vice President of the Upper Ohio Valley Dapper Dan, board member of the Salvation Army, Red Cross, and much more.
In addition to his career in education, Dan owned and operated Kemp-Finell Realty, Wellsburg.
Many will remember Dan for his love of travel, attending auctions, his community outreach, and never meeting a stranger.
In addition to his parents, Daniel was preceded in death by his sister, Charlotte "Chic" Julia Beauty.
Daniel is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 63 years, Donna (Schmitt) Finell; three children, Tammy Cutshall and her husband, Paul, Daniel Finell Jr, and Amy McMahon and her husband, Phil; four grandchildren, Alexis and Nathan Cutshall, Noah and Aryana Talbott, brother-in-law, Sheldon Beauty and close family friend George Brindley, as well as numerous friends, former educators and church family.
Family and friends will be received on Thursday from 11 a.m. till service at 2 p.m. at the Chambers Funeral Home, Wellsburg, WV (304)737-3551 with Pastor Joy Leasure, officiating.
Interment will follow at Franklin Cemetery, Wellsburg, WV with Military Honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dan Finell Memorial Baseball Scholarship, c/o Chambers Funeral Home, 1030 Main St., Wellsburg, WV 26070.
