ALFONSO “PANCHO” FLORES

Alfonso "Pancho" Flores, age 82, of Moundsville, WV, passed away Friday, July 28, 2023 at WVU Reynolds Memorial Hospital Glen Dale, WV.

Pancho was born May 22, 1941 Glen Dale, WV; the son of the late Louis and Laura Flores of Moundsville.

He attended St. Francis Xavier grade school; and graduated from Wheeling Central Catholic High School where he was a standout basketball player, having been named to the West Virginia Sports Writers Association (WVSWA) Catholic All-Star team in 1958 and 1959 (Captain). In 1958, Pancho received an Honorable Mention to the WVSWA All State Team and in 1959 was named to the WVSWA All State "Big" First Team.

He was a former employee of PPG Industries, a graduate of West Liberty State College, and served in the United States Coast Guard. Pancho was a teacher at John Marshall High School for 31 years; past member of the Grand Vue Park Golf Board, and a past member of the Marshall County Parks and Recreation Board.

Pancho's love of all sports led him to a career in coaching. He was the boys head basketball coach at John Marshall for 17 years, and head softball coach at John Marshall for 23 years. In softball, he was named Coach of the Year in 1991 and 2006; his teams had 6 OVAC championships, made 5 appearances in the WV State Softball Tournament, and in 1988 his team won the WV State Softball Tournament. In 1991, Pancho was named the head coach of the OVAC West Virginia All-Stars boys basketball team, and in 2007 was the winner of the Ohio Valley Dapper Dan Organization Spirit/Leadership Award.

In addition to his parents, Pancho was preceded in death by two daughters, Lisa and Lori, his brother and sister-in-law, Louis and June Flores; sister and brother-in- law, Elvira and William Bartels; sister and brother-in-law, Guadalupe "Lupe" and James "Sonny" Hewitt; brother-in-law, William Underdonk; brother, Anjelo T. Flores; mother and father-in-law, Roy and Ann Everson; brother- in-law, Roy Everson, Jr; and several nieces and nephews.

Pancho is survived by his beloved wife, Sonia Everson Flores; a son, Alfonso "Pancho" Flores II of Moundsville; sisters, Dolores Underdonk of Huntington, WV, Teresa Flores of Proctor, WV, and Maria (Tom) Ebbert of Moundsville, WV; sister-in-law, Pat Everson of NJ; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Family will receive friends on Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Grisell Funeral Home & Crematory 400 Jefferson Ave. Moundsville, WV, where services will be held Tuesday at 11am.

Interment will follow in Riverview Cemetery Moundsville.
