GEORGE GONGOLA

George Edward Gongola, 91, of Wheeling, WV, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 13, 2023 in Good Shepherd Nursing Home.

He was born in Bellaire, OH, on February 27, 1932, a son of the late Walter and Mary (Dyrdek) Gongola. George was a graduate of Wheeling Central Catholic High School and a faithful member of St. Michael Catholic Church. He served in the Army during the Korean War and later retired from Canalco Aluminum.

George was an avid golfer and tennis player. His real passion was baseball and was the last remaining player of the 1949 Post 1 Legion Baseball Team that went to the Legion World Series. He also played in the Cleveland Indians Minor League System.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by six brothers; Stanley, Fredrick, Walter, Joseph, Alfred and Edward and three sisters; Dorothy, Pauline and Elsie.

George is survived by two brothers, John (Bertha) Gongola and Kenny (Linda) Gongola both of Wheeling; two sisters, Rosemary (WD) Duplaga of Cleveland, OH, and Patricia Gongola of Wheeling; and several nieces and nephews.

A mass of Christian burial will be held Wednesday, July 19, 2023, at 10 a.m. at St. Michael Catholic Church. Interment will be held at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
