Stella (Markos) Sfamenos, 93, formerly of Short Creek, WV, passed away on Thursday, July 13, 2023. She was born in Wheeling, WV, on August 23, 1929, and was the daughter of Paul and Diamonte (Tsuhlares) Markos.
Stella graduated from Wellsburg High School. As a young lady she worked in her family's grocery store. She worked at Stone & Thomas in Wheeling for over 20 years in the purchasing department until her retirement. She especially enjoyed accompanying buyers on their trips to New York City. As a life-long member of St. John the Divine Greek Orthodox Church, she was involved in many activities. She was an active member of the Ladies of the Philoptoches, Daughters of the Penelope and the Cretan Club. The church was central to her life, and she spent many hours baking and volunteering at annual food festivals and events. Stella was known for her culinary/baking talents; she and her sister were featured on the cover of the Wheeling Magazine. She was a 2022 St. Photios Parish Honoree, recognized by the Metropolis of Pittsburgh for her life-long service and dedication. Her life has been one of grace, wisdom and love.
In addition to her parents, Stella was preceded in her death by her husband, Marenos Sfamenos; sister, Goldie Basil; brothers, Nick and Manuel Markos; sister-in-laws, Gertrude Markos and Dora Taibi; brother-in-laws, Charles Basil and Joe Taibi; niece and goddaughter, Tammy Markos; and many dear aunts, uncles and cousins.
Surviving are her children, Helen (Greg) Hannan of Bolivar, OH, Steve (Nancy) Sfamenos of Spring, TX, Nickie Sfamenos of Marietta, GA; grandsons, Paul (Tiffany) Hannan, Alex (Laura) Hannan, Nick Hannan and Steven (Kathleen) Sfamenos; granddaughter, Christina (Christopher) O'Donnell; Grandchildren, Austin, Asher, Iris, Charlie Charlotte Hannan, Lydia and Lukas Sfamenos and Christopher O'Donnell. She was lovingly known by her grandchildren as "Yiayia." Stella's extended family is especially dear to her, she had many nieces, nephews, cousins and goddaughters.
Friends will be received at Kepner Funeral Home (Burke Chapel) 2722 Warwood Ave., Wheeling, WV on Wednesday, July 19, from 4-8 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at St. John the Divine Greek Orthodox Church, 2215 Chapline St., Wheeling, WV, at 11:00 a.m. with Father Spyridon Kehayes officiating. Trisagion Prayer at 10:15 a.m., prior to the funeral service. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery, Wheeling.
