William Andrew O'Toole III, lovingly known as Bud, passed away on August 23, 2023, after a valiant battle against ALS. He was born on December 3, 1938, in Wheeling, WV, and at the time of his passing, he was 84 years old.
Throughout his life, Bud had an esteemed career as a pilot. He served as a Captain for Eastern Airlines and flew for Wheeling- Pittsburgh Steel/WHX Corporation. He later completed his career by serving as the Chief Pilot and Flight Department Director for the University of Notre Dame. Bud's dedication and expertise in aviation were deeply admired by all who knew him.
Bud had a fierce love for his family. He was married to his beloved wife, Eleanor O'Toole, for an incredible 62 years. Together, they created a beautiful family and cherished every moment spent with their children: Erin (Kevin) Moroney of Senoia, GA, William (Lynn) O'Toole IV of Bethlehem, PA, Colleen (Robert) Kessler of Statesville, NC, and Maureen (Brian) South of Westerville, OH. Bud was a proud grandfather to 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy to his life: Shane Moroney, Killian Moroney, Molly Moroney, Julianne O'Toole, Meghan O'Toole, Tyler Kessler, Caitlin Kessler, Cameron Kessler, Liam South, Bridget South, Rowan South, Scarlett Moroney, and Ember Moroney.
Apart from his professional and family life, Bud held a special place in his heart for his community of faith at St. Michael's Parish. He was a very proud member of the American Legion Post 1. Bud's service extended to his country as well, as he was a Designated Naval Aviator in 1960 and flew the Grumman S-2 Tracker as a member of VS-24 aboard the USS Intrepid. He was decorated with various honors, including the Navy Expeditionary Medal (Cuba, CVSG-56-DET 14, VS-24) and the National Defense Service Medal.
Bud is preceded in death by his parents, William Andrew and Alma (Tomlinson) O'Toole Jr., as well as his uncle, Alfred Tomlinson. He is survived by his loving wife, Eleanor, his children, grandchildren, great- grandchildren, and his sister, Carol Divelbiss of Hagerstown, MD.
Those who wish to pay their respects may attend the visitation at Altmeyer Funeral Home on Kruger Street, Wheeling, WV, on Saturday, August 26, 2023, from 2 pm to 4 pm and from 6 pm to 8 pm. A Vigil will take place at 7 pm during the visitation.
A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, August 28, 2023, at 11 am at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Wheeling, WV. Father Praveen will be the Celebrant for the service.
Bud's memory will forever be cherished by his family and friends, as he leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion that will continue to inspire all those who knew him.
