William E. "Bill" Matheny, 76, of Benwood, WV, passed away Saturday, October 14, 2023, in Wheeling Hospital WVU Medicine, Wheeling, WV.
Bill was born November 7, 1946, in Wheeling, the son of the late Gene and Grace (Raymond) Whipkey. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in Korea during the Vietnam War era. For over 20 years after that, he served in the U.S. Army Reserves, where he retired with the rank of Master Sergeant. He was also a retired electrician for Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel Corp; and a member of the American Legion, Post No. 46, Benwood, and the VFW Post No. 80 and Moose Lodge No. 619, Steubenville, OH.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Priscilla Virginia (Kudlak) Matheny, in 2010. He is survived by his daughter, Kimberly Franey and her husband, Kyle of Murrells Inlet, SC; and two granddaughters, Ashlyn Priscilla and Madison Grace Franey, both of Murrells Inlet. Bill is also survived by his companion, Barbara Benson of Benwood; and extended family members, James and Dee Dean, and their son, Tyler, all of Triadelphia, WV.
Friends will be received from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Benwood-McMechen Chapel, 214 Marshall Street, McMechen, WV. Friends will then be received on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, at the former St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Boggs Run, Benwood, from 10 a.m. until time of funeral services at 11 a.m. with Rev. Dr. Mitch Johnston officiating.
Interment will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery, with full military honors provided by the Moundsville Veterans Honor Guard.
