HAROLD McCAIN
Harold Joseph McCain, 89, of New Martinsville, WV passed away Friday, November 17, 2023, at Wheeling Hospital, Wheeling, WV with family by his side.
He was born to Fred and Marie (Hurla) McClain on April 13, 1934, in Kansas City, Kansas. In 1952, he graduated from Bishop Ward High School, Kansas City, Kansas. Harold enlisted in the Unites States Coast Guard and served during the Korean conflict. He was a 1961 graduate of the University of Detroit with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. In 1986, he earned his MBA from Wheeling Jesuit College. Harold retired from the Ormet Corporation in 1996 after working there for 26 years.
Harold was an avid reader, a life-long learner, and spent his life in the service of others. Most people will remember him for his many stories. At St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church, Harold served as a Eucharistic Minister, CCD Teacher, and member of the Holy Name Society. He was a dedicated volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America receiving multiple awards including the Silver Beaver award in 2002. Additionally, he received the Bronze Pelican for supporting scouting in the Catholic Church. For 26 years, Harold served on the Ohio Valley Community Federal Credit Union’s Board of Directors and was a former member of the New Martinsville Parks and Recreation Board of Directors, Junior Achievement Leader, Jaycees, Loyal Order of the Moose, Elk’s, and American Legion Post #28. Through the years, he enjoyed woodworking, golfing, camping, and hunting.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Marie; son Bryan; siblings, Sr. Mary Joanilla, OSF (Helen Josephine), Herb, Fred, John, and infant sister, Rita Marie.
Harold was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and is survived by his wife of 65 years, Joan; his children, Joseph (Janet), Douglas (Susan) Richard (Sue), Rebecca, and daughter-in-law Trish; his grandchildren, Meghan (Sergio) Garcia, Brittany Sanders, Emily McClain, Marissa McClain, Catherine McClain, Summer Timbs (Caleb Schilling), Colin McClain, John Bittner and Steve Kiggins, as well as 3 great grandchildren; his siblings, Margaret Baker, Bob (Virginia), and Mike (Dorothy) and sisters-in-law Helen Skradski and Billie McClain, several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends for memorial visitation, on Sunday November 26 from 3pm to 6pm at Grisell Funeral Home & Crematory, 751 Third Street, New Martinsville where Rosary Devotions will be recited at 6 pm.
A celebration of life and memorial mass will be held Monday, November 27, 2023, at 11:00 am, at St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church, New Martinsville, WV, Msgr Kevin Quirk, officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church or the BSA Ohio River Valley Council.
