James L. Smith, 92, of Valley Grove, WV, passed away Monday, November 6, 2023 at his home.
He was born December 30, 1930, in Wheeling, WV, son of the late John L. and Eleanor McCoy Smith.
James was a retired Welder for Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel Company, Beech Bottom Plant, and a faithful longtime member of West Alexander United Methodist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran who served during the Korean War. He was known for his carpentry skills, having remodeled many homes with kitchens and bathrooms being his specialty. He was also known for his relentless lawn care.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Virginia Armstrong Smith in 2010; 2 brothers, Harold Smith and his twin, Charles; and sister, Ruth Cassity.
He is survived by his 3 children, Norma Straight of Valley Grove, WV, John (Joan) Smith of Valley Grove, WV, and Mary Ellen (Fred) Dague of Valley Grove, WV; 2 grandsons, Jim (Kayla) Straight & Andy (Kyrie) Straight; 4 great-grandchildren; and several nieces & nephews.
Graveside services will be held Thursday, November 9, 2023 at 11:00 AM at West Alexander Cemetery with Pastor Jacob Judy officiating and the Moundsville Veteran Honor Guard performing military honors.
