MARY MAYER

Mary Emily Mayer, affectionately known as Emily, passed away on November 9, 2023, at the remarkable age of 88. Born on December 10, 1934, in Wheeling, WV, Emily lived a life full of love, laughter, and countless memorable moments.

Emily devoted many years to her work as a retired bookkeeper at the former Ohio Valley Medical Center in her hometown. But her true passions lay beyond the office walls. She was a woman of faith and an integral part of the Wheeling Island Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Her dedication to her church family was unwavering, and she wore many hats within the congregation, including serving as an elder and choir member. Emily's commitment extended to her community as well, where she actively participated in the Ohio County PTA, Band Mom, Garden Club, Thursday Music Club, and the Island Community Association.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Charles W. Mayer, Jr., mother Goldie Walters Pryor, and two brothers, Harvey W. and Richard J. Pryor. She is survived by her children Mark William (Brenda) Mayer, Mikel Darin Mayer, and Susan Lynn (Tim) Toland, who will forever hold her dear in their hearts. Emily's love knew no bounds, and this love extended to her grandchildren: Bryan (Trang) Beabout, Connor Mayer, Aaron (Dana) Bowles, Brandon Bowles, and Emily Toland.

Emily's life will be celebrated with services held in her honor. Visitation will take place on Monday, November 13, from 3-7 pm at Altmeyer Funeral Home, located at 1400 Eoff Street in Wheeling, WV. Additional visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 14, starting at 10 am until the time of the funeral service at 11 am at the funeral home. Following the service, Emily will be laid to rest at Bridgeport Cemetery in Bridgeport, OH.

Emily was a strong, independent, and nurturing person. Her unwavering dedication to both her personal family and her church family was unparalleled. Although she may no longer be with us, the impact she made on the lives of those around her will continue to be felt for generations to come.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Disciples Women of WV in Emily's memory. Contributions can be made online at www.tmc funding.com. She would be deeply touched by any act of kindness in support of her beloved church.

As we bid farewell to Emily, let us remember her vibrant spirit, her love for others, and the countless memories she leaves behind. May her soul find eternal peace, knowing the profound impact she had on the world around her.
