EDITH COTTRELL

Edith Cottrell, beloved mother, grandmother, and great- grandmother, passed away peacefully on December 4, 2023, in Wheeling, WV, at the age of 75. She was born on July 12, 1948, in Elsfleth, Germany, to the late Olaf and Elfriede (Ohlrogge) Saar.

Edith dedicated over 30 years of her life to serving her community through her work at the Social Security Administration office in Wheeling. Her passion for her job was evident to all who knew her. She retired from her position, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and dedication. It was a career that shaped her life.

One of the proudest moments of Edith’s life was when she became an American citizen on September 21, 1973. It was a significant milestone that filled her heart with joy, symbolizing her commitment and love for her new home.

Edith is preceded in death by her loving husband, Lloyd F. Cottrell, her parents, Olaf and Elfriede Saar, her grandparents, Johann and Frieda (Von Haefen) Ohlrogge, and her brother, Robert Saar.

She is survived by her sons, Lloyd Anthony “Tony” Cottrell and his wife, Brenda, and Alexander “Alex” Scott Cottrell. Edith’s pride and joy were her grandchildren: Tiffany (Josh), Cory, Bradley (Nicole), Zachary, June, and Sierra. Additionally, she leaves behind several nieces, nephews, and cousins who will cherish her memory.

Edith’s heart was filled with an abundance of love and pride for her two sons, Tony and Alex. Watching her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren grow into productive members of society gave her immense joy. She will forever be remembered for the unwavering love and dedication she showed to her family and friends.

A private interment will take place at Greenwood Cemetery on Saturday, December 16, followed by a Memorial “Celebration of Life” Service on Sunday, December 17, at 2 p.m. at the Elm Grove Civics in Wheeling.
