George Franklin Longwell, 81, of Wheeling and formerly of Benwood, WV, passed away on Saturday, January 6, 2024, at Select Care Services.
George was born on March 17, 1942, in Littleton, WV, the son of the late Mildred (Jobes) and Clarence Longwell. He worked at No. 3 Coal Mine until its closure, worked for Fostoria Glass, was a 20-year dispatcher for the Benwood Police Department, and drove a semi for the United States Postal Service where he made many friends along the way.
George is survived by his wife of 63 years Mary Ann (Corvino) Longwell; three daughters Rose Rutledge, Diane (Jerry) Leighton, and Annette (Dave) Johnson; a son Frank (Lori) Longwell; and his special angel granddaughter Jennifer Longwell. He also leaves behind 14 additional grandchildren and 21 great- grandchildren.
An avid hunter in his day, George enjoyed deer hunting with his son and grandson. He also loved everything related to his family. He will be sadly missed by his sidekick, his Shih Tzu Ryder.
Family and friends will be received on Wednesday, January 10, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and from 6:00 to 8:00 pm and on Thursday, January 11, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at Altmeyer Funeral Homes Benwood-McMechen Chapel, 214 Marshall St. Funeral services will commence on Thursday, January 11, at 11:00 am at the Benwood-McMechen Chapel directly followed by entombment at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery Garden Mausoleum.
