Russell G. Mobley passed away on Friday, March 1, 2024 at his home in Carmel, IN.
He was born on May 16, 1933 in Wheeling, WV and raised in the St. Clairsville, OH area along with his sister, Wilma Gay.
His parents were Russell G. Mobley, Sr and Mabel Mobley. His parents, sister and first wife preceded him in death.
After graduating from William & Jefferson College, Russ joined the U.S. Navy and served his country from 1956-1959. He continued to serve in the U.S. Naval Reserve until 1967.
Russ spent his career as a coal broker. He and his first wife, Nancy, lived in many different cities before settling in Carmel, IN, where they lived together until her death. In 2011, Russ reconnected with Sally Owens Thompson, widow of his friend from St. Clairsville, Charles H. "Tom" Thompson. Russ and Sally were married in Bel Meade, TN on December 26, 2012.
As a young man, Russ was active in school sports, competing with both the basketball and track teams. In the summers, Russ worked for his father in coal industry administration as he completed his college education. He eventually established his own coal brokerage business, which he continued until he retired in the late 1990s.
Russ enjoyed golfing, travel, and spending time with family and friends. He and Sally enjoyed trips together and with other couples. They were always on the go, visiting new places and returning to their favorite spots many times. He was also heavily involved with philanthropic causes, spending his time and offering his leadership skills to several programs and organizations.
He is survived by his wife, Sally Owens Mobley, and his three stepchildren, Wendy Thompson Crick of Mt. Juliet, TN; Lori Thompson Waters of New Braunfels, TX, and Douglas Stuart Thompson of Mt. Juliet, TN.
A memorial service will be held at the Stratford in Carmel, IN (2460 Glebe St., Carmel, IN 46032) on Friday, May 10, 2024 at 3:00 pm. Russ was a generous and caring son, brother, husband and stepfather. He will be greatly missed.
