Don Nelson Bryant passed away peacefully at his home on April 5, 2024. He was born in Wheeling, West Virginia, son of the late Carl V. and Anna Sampson Bryant on May 2, 1936.
He was a member of Dallas United Methodist Church, Dallas Lions Club, and Masonic Lodge Wheeling No.5 AF and AM. After graduating from Warwood High School in 1954, he attended West Virginia University.
He met the love of his life Suzanne McCoy at a young men and women's conference at Jackson Mill. They went on to be married in 1962 and left for a 2 year Army commitment.
His love of adventure and travel began when he and Suzanne accepted a position with one of the first groups sent abroad through the United States Peace Corps where they spent two years working in Puno, Peru. Upon return to the States, the couple eventually settled in Dallas, West Virginia where they raised their two children Scott (Julie) Bryant of Marysville, Ohio and Heidi (Matt) McMahon of Wheeling.
Don taught building construction at Wheeling Park High School for 27 years and upon retirement, he and Suzanne continued their travels to many places in the United States and abroad. They spent winters in Arizona and St. Croix, USVI, took a train across Canada into Alaska, visited Russia and most of the National Parks in the United States. He was very involved in 4-H and loved tending to his farm, especially his 3 donkeys "Jefferson," "Sassy" and "Buckeye."
He was known as "Pop" to his grandchildren Zac, Shane, and Carter McMahon and "Grandpa" to Cade and Anna Bryant whom he adored and shared vacations, trips, and milestones of life. He has instilled in his family, his love for life, adventure and the satisfaction of a completion of a hard day's work.
He was a master carpenter and wood worker and anyone receiving a gift of his work, considered themselves lucky.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by nephew, Stephen Bryant of Wheeling, WV.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Suzanne McCoy Bryant; a son, Scott (Julie) Bryant of Marysville, OH, a daughter Heidi (Matt) McMahon of Wheeling, WV; 5 grandchildren Zac, Shane, and Carter McMahon of Triadelphia, WV and Cade and Anna Bryant of Marysville, OH; a brother Gary (Linda) Bryant; brothers-in- law brothers-in-law Stewart (Alice) McCoy, John McCoy and sister-in-law Karen (Llewellyn) McCoy. He was Uncle Don to 11 nieces and nephews all of whom enjoyed his sense of humor and love of every meal being the "best one ever".
Family will receive friends on Friday from 2-4pm and 6-8 pm at Grisell Funeral Home & Crematory, 1 Ridgecrest Road, Wheeling/Bethlehem, where funeral services will be held Saturday at 11am with Pastor Monica Salvo officiating. Interment in Mt. View cemetery Dallas, WV. Donations can be made to Dallas United Methodist Church in Don's honor.
