Linda Faye (Brookes) Showalter, 82, of Warwood, passed away on Sunday, April 21, 2024, at Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Wheeling.
She was born in Wheeling on October 10, 1941, the daughter of the late Harry and Marjorie (Barth) Brookes. She attended Warwood United Methodist Church.
Linda was a member of the Warwood High School Class of 1959 and attended Elliott School of Business in Wheeling. She retired as the office manager for Lazo Family Medicine in Bridgeport, Ohio, and previously worked for the pediatric office of Dr. Joseph T. Morris.
Linda's work history started in the 1950s, as a teenager, when she was a car hop waitress at Brooks Restaurant on River Road. The restaurant was opened by her parents and was a fixture in the Wheeling area as Brooks Restaurant and Viking Lounge for 30 years. The wonderful memories created from running that business -- and the many friendships made with the employees and customers -- are something the family cherishes.
Linda was president of the Junior Women's Club of Warwood in the 1970s and was proud of the charity work they did. She always talked about what fun they had at the state conventions in Charleston. She also spent plenty of evenings at the Elm Grove Bowling Lanes, bowling with a team of ladies she loved and even earning a few trophies for a series of 200-plus games. She also was a member for way too many years of Weight Watchers, but it was never really about reaching a goal on that scale. It was about getting together with her good friends and going out to dinner afterward!
Linda always looked forward to going to the beach and cherished the family trips to Ocean City, Maryland, and Myrtle Beach, S.C. She also had a special place in her heart for her pooch, Bella.
Most of all, Linda loved her family. First and foremost was her husband of 64 years, Theodore "Ted" Showalter, her best friend and the love of her life, who survives her.
In addition to her parents, Linda was preceded in death by an older brother, Harry Jr.; a younger sister, Susan (Brookes) Baker; grandson, Jeffrey Showalter; nieces, Erin Brookes, Margie Cook and Linda Showalter; and nephew John Showalter.
Besides her husband, Linda is survived by her daughter, Brenda (Jim) Jackson of Columbus, Ohio; son, Ted (Becky) Showalter Jr. of St. Clairsville; brother, Brian (Debbie) Brookes of Warwood; sisters-in-law, Joann Showalter and Judi (Dave) Kirker, both of Bethlehem, Marjorie "Joan" Korpon of St. Clairsville, and Jean (Tom) Coffman of The Villages, Fla; grandchildren Jenny Showalter, Abby (Ben) Jordan, Dalton (Michaela) Showalter, Elizabeth Jackson and Olivia Showalter; great- grandchildren, Carter and MaLeaha Hunter, Benjamin Jordan and Tate Showalter; her aunt, Caddie Icenhower of Warwood; and many loved nieces, nephews and cousins. Linda also is survived by beloved friend, Diane Costain, who helped care for Linda after her dementia diagnosis.
Friends will be received on Wednesday, April 24, 2024 from 3 p.m. until the time of service at 6 p.m. at Kepner Funeral Home/Burke Chapel, 2101 Warwood Ave.. Wheeling, WV (304-277-2722).
